Association between the hemoglobin albumin lymphocyte and platelet score and chronic kidney disease: insights from patient data and animal models

The study examined the relationship between the HALP score (hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocytes, and platelets) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in a sample of 25,160 adult participants from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2009 and 2018. Results showed that higher HALP scores were associated with lower risk of CKD and albuminuria, with a threshold effect identified at an inflection point of 52.43. The HALP score demonstrated superior discriminative ability for CKD and albuminuria compared to other biomarkers. Findings were further validated in an animal model with 5/6 nephrectomy in rats, where CKD model rats exhibited significantly lower HALP scores. As an affordable and readily measurable biomarker, the HALP score may facilitate chronic kidney disease risk assessment.
