Kwashiorkor

Kwashiorkor is a severe form of malnutrition caused by protein deficiency in the diet, occurring mainly in children in developing countries. The disease is characterized by edema (swelling), changes in skin and hair, hepatomegaly (liver enlargement), and immune system disorders. Patients often suffer from weakness, apathy, and growth disturbances. Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms and biochemical tests. Treatment consists of gradual introduction of balanced nutrition with adequate protein under medical supervision. Without proper treatment, kwashiorkor can lead to serious complications and death, especially in young children.
