In the Netherlands, a child under 12 years old underwent euthanasia, marking the first such case in the country's history. Health Minister Sophie Hermans announced the procedure at the end of 2025. Dutch law has permitted euthanasia for terminally ill children aged 1 to 12 since 2024. The exact age and diagnosis of the child are unknown. The decision required approval from parents and a medical board, and if the child was capable, it could also express its own wishes regarding the end of life. The case is currently being investigated by prosecutors to verify that the doctor acted in accordance with the law. Belgium became the first European country to legalize euthanasia for children in 2014.
