Hana Kahleová, director of clinical research at the American Committee of Physicians for Responsible Medicine, highlights that diet is an often-overlooked way to enhance the effectiveness of GLP-1-based medications for obesity and type 2 diabetes. GLP-1 is a natural hormone produced by our body in the intestines in response to food, which regulates insulin secretion, appetite, and stomach emptying. Properly chosen diet activates our body's own GLP-1 system through multiple signals simultaneously, which fundamentally differs from pharmaceutical drugs that provide only one strong signal. Clinical studies have demonstrated that plant-based diets rich in whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables improve insulin sensitivity, reduce fat in the liver and muscles, and in some cases led to remission of type 2 diabetes. The most effective strategy is not choosing between diet and medication, but their integration, as they mutually strengthen each other's effectiveness and may allow lower drug doses.
