Multi-country outbreak of Salmonella Bovismorbificans ST377 infections linked to the consumption of alfalfa sprouted seeds

Between January and May 2026, a multi-country outbreak of Salmonella Bovismorbificans ST377 infections was reported. A total of 109 confirmed cases were identified across 10 EU/EEA countries (Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Spain, and the Netherlands) and the United Kingdom. The outbreak was linked to the consumption of alfalfa sprouted seeds. Infections predominantly affected adult females. Eighteen cases required hospitalisation. Two deaths were reported in Finland, including one confirmed and one probable case.
