The State Agricultural and Food Inspection Authority (SZPI) detected Salmonella bacteria in chilled chicken breasts from Poland sold in the Tesco chain with an expiration date of May 25. This is the latest in several cases of Salmonella found in chicken meat tested by the inspection authority this year, with products coming from various retail chains and countries. Although the meat is no longer on sale, consumers may have it stored in their freezers at home. The inspection recommends not consuming such products because freezing does not kill the bacteria. A temperature of 60 degrees Celsius or higher is required to destroy Salmonella, and this temperature must reach not only the surface but also the interior of the meat. SZPI has initiated administrative proceedings against the seller with the threat of a fine and will report the non-compliant food to the European rapid alert system for food and feed (RASFF).
