In July 2025, chikungunya transmission was confirmed in Cuba in Perico municipality, Matanzas Province. Of 12 serum samples from patients with unknown fever, 8 tested positive for chikungunya virus (66.7%). Patients suffered from high-grade fever lasting 48 to 72 hours unresponsive to antipyretics and severe disabling joint pain, predominantly in the hands, ankles, and back. Additional symptoms included rash, oral lesions, vomiting, and diarrhea. The median age of patients was 46 years. The virus was identified as the East/Central/South African genotype related to 2025 Brazilian strains. By epidemiologic week 52, transmission was confirmed in 15 provinces and 147 municipalities with 49,258 suspected cases, 1,959 confirmed cases, and 46 deaths.
