High temperatures in the Czech Republic are expected to last until the end of the week, with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Prague hospitals are reporting a significant increase in emergency department visits – the Royal Vinohrady and Bulovka Faculty Hospitals report a 30 percent increase, while Motol and Homolka hospitals report a 10 to 15 percent increase. Patients are arriving mainly with symptoms of body overheating including heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration, manifesting as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and in severe cases, collapse. The Prague emergency medical service responded to 44 heat-related collapse cases on Wednesday, and the total number of ambulance calls increased from the usual 400 per 24 hours to over 300 in just the morning shift. The most vulnerable groups are seniors aged 70 and older, patients with heart disease, epilepsy, and cancer patients. Experts recommend adequate fluid intake, avoiding alcohol and energy drinks, and avoiding physically demanding activities during the hottest hours of the day.
