[Correspondence] July 2026 floods in Chattogram, Bangladesh: an escalating emergency

Since July 5, 2026, southeastern Bangladesh has been affected by widespread floods, prolonged waterlogging, and landslides. These events were caused by exceptionally heavy monsoon rainfall, runoff from surrounding hills, high tides, and embankment failures. By July 11, the floods had claimed at least 44 lives across seven affected districts. In Chattogram District alone, 11 deaths and 12 injuries were recorded. Approximately 759,530 people in this district were affected, and 188,648 families were left stranded. Of the total 44 deaths, 43 occurred across five districts within the Chattogram Division. This highlights the concentration of this emergency in the southeastern part of the country.
