The study examined factors influencing symptoms of problematic video gaming in adolescents with different gaming habits. The research was conducted on a large sample of Singaporean adolescents between 2007 and 2009 and tracked changes over two years. It was found that in occasional gamers (those who did not usually play at the study's start), changes in gaming consumption led to changes in problematic gaming symptoms. In heavy gamers (those with the most intensive gaming at baseline), impulsivity was a key factor influencing symptoms. The research emphasizes the need for tailored preventive measures based on current gaming habits. For occasional gamers, progressive introduction of gaming with age-appropriate limits and parental supervision is recommended.
