A comprehensive review of more than 350 studies suggests that reduced protein intake may support healthier aging and potentially extend lifespan. According to the research, lower protein consumption can improve metabolism, reduce inflammation and cellular damage, and activate biological pathways associated with longevity. Scientists found that the hormone FGF21, which increases with lower protein intake, can boost energy expenditure and improve blood sugar regulation. Certain amino acids such as methionine, isoleucine, and valine may activate growth pathways that increase the risk of obesity and inflammation when consumed excessively. However, new US dietary guidelines recommend daily protein consumption of 1.2-1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight, nearly double the previous amount. Protein needs vary by individual, as pregnant women and older adults may require higher intake.
