Hepatitis is called the "silent disease" because it often causes no pain or warning symptoms and can silently damage the liver for years before manifesting as cirrhosis or liver cancer. In 2023, 3,172 people died from hepatitis in the European Union, the lowest number since 2011. The highest mortality rates occur in Southern Europe, particularly in Italy (1.62 per 100,000 inhabitants), Latvia, and Austria. According to the World Health Organization, only 23 percent of people with hepatitis B have been diagnosed and only 4.2 percent receive treatment. Since 2021, the number of newly detected cases has increased – hepatitis B rose from 28,855 cases in 2022 to 37,766 in 2023. The main problem is unequal access to testing and treatment across Europe and low vaccination rates despite vaccine availability.
