The study examined risk factors for polypharmacy (use of 5 or more medications) and excessive polypharmacy (10 or more medications) in 326 patients aged over 65 years. The mean age of participants was 74 years. The research found a positive correlation between age and the number of medications used. Patients with polypharmacy visited significantly more healthcare facilities than patients without polypharmacy. Independent risk factors identified were: age, high blood pressure, gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes, neuropsychiatric disorders, and the number of healthcare institutions visited. The study concluded that aging and chronic diseases are significantly associated with polypharmacy. Integrated care and medication review could help reduce inappropriate use of multiple medications and enhance patient safety.
