Risk factors for vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women: a meta-analysis

Vertebral fractures are the most common osteoporotic fractures in postmenopausal women and are associated with higher morbidity, lower quality of life, and increased mortality risk. A meta-analysis of 11 studies involving 7,605 participants identified several significant risk factors. Advanced age, higher body mass index, history of previous fracture, low lumbar spine bone mineral density, glucocorticoid use, and rheumatoid arthritis were associated with increased risk of vertebral fractures. The findings suggest that early screening and intervention in high-risk groups may reduce the incidence of vertebral fractures and enable more individualized prevention and treatment strategies.
