The study analyzed 562 participants from the PREDIMED-Plus trial to determine how diabetes and blood sugar control affect heart disease risk biomarkers. Participants were divided into four groups based on HbA1c levels: normal glycemia (50 people), prediabetes (353 people), well-controlled diabetes (127 people), and poorly controlled diabetes (32 people). Researchers measured five cardiac biomarkers at baseline and after 3 and 5 years. Results showed that even in people with well-controlled diabetes, there is an increase in heart damage and cardiac fibrosis. The study concluded that incorporating cardiac biomarkers into risk assessment could help with early identification of cardiovascular disease risk in high-risk populations.
