The LITMUS study investigated non-invasive alternatives to liver biopsy in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). The aim was to find methods that could replace liver biopsy histopathology. The diagnostic accuracy of elastography and elastography-based composite scores was evaluated. These non-invasive tests demonstrated sufficient accuracy in assessing advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis. It was found that they can replace liver biopsy histopathology for these conditions. However, none of the evaluated markers were accurate enough for diagnosing metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH).
