New research published in Nature magazine uses a mathematical model to estimate that even if almost all reversible signs of aging were removed, human life would be limited by natural somatic mutations in DNA. Scientists estimate median life expectancy at 146 to 194 years and maximum life expectancy at 210 to 557 years. A key finding is that organs with regenerative capacity, such as the liver, could function for tens of thousands of years, while brain neurons and heart muscle cells, which barely divide in adulthood, represent the primary barrier to longevity. The research shows that aging is a multifactorial process and removing only one factor would likely not result in significant life extension. Scientists emphasize that attention should shift from overall life span to the quality of healthy life, with the strongest evidence still supporting traditional measures such as regular exercise and not smoking.
