A study examined how hearing-aid users adjust sound settings using a think-aloud protocol. Thirty-six adult hearing-aid users verbalized their thoughts while adjusting settings for three sound types (music, speech, and speech in noise) using three types of control interfaces (1 slider, 2 sliders, or 3 sliders). The research revealed two main approaches to self-adjustment: the exploratory type, which tests functions and selects optimal settings, and the anticipatory type, which identifies problems and adjusts settings based on past experiences. Both types often occur at different stages within the same adjustment. The descriptors used by participants during adjustments aligned with expert-based data. This framework helps explain how users navigate the personalization process and how self-adjustment increases understanding of available options and ownership of the process.
