Abnormal visual-vestibular cerebro-cerebellar connectivity in persistent postural-perceptual dizziness

The study examined differences in brain connectivity between patients with persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) and healthy individuals. The research included 53 PPPD patients and 54 healthy control subjects matched by age and sex. Results showed reduced connectivity between the posterior insula and visual brain areas in PPPD patients. Conversely, increased connectivity was found between the brain area responsible for perceived motion and the cerebellum, as well as between other brain structures and the cerebellum. Activity in the right hippocampus was also elevated. Researchers interpret these findings as a neural substrate for impaired sensory information processing in PPPD patients, leading to abnormal perception of self-motion.
