Comparative analysis of candidate gene expression in Asian atopic dermatitis and psoriasis: identification of shared and distinct molecular features

The study compared gene expression in affected skin of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis, and healthy controls. Results showed that filaggrin (FLG) expression was significantly decreased in both diseases compared to healthy controls (AD: p = 0.0043, psoriasis: p = 0.0012). Similarly, loricrin (LOR) expression was reduced in both diseases (AD: p = 0.0043, psoriasis: p = 0.0082). SPINK5 expression was elevated in psoriasis (p = 0.0012) but decreased in AD (p = 0.0173). SERPINB4 expression was increased in both diseases (AD: p = 0.0043, psoriasis: p = 0.0012). Immunofluorescence analysis confirmed these findings at the protein level. SPINK5 appears as the most promising candidate for distinguishing between AD and psoriasis in Asian patients.
