The Ebola epidemic in eastern Congo has claimed over 1,700 lives with 3,802 confirmed cases recorded. The epidemic was declared on May 15 and is caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain, for which no approved vaccine or treatment currently exists. Approximately 80 percent of new cases result from community transmission rather than traced contacts. The epidemic is concentrated mainly in Ituri province in eastern Congo, accounting for nearly 90 percent of cases. The current outbreak is spreading faster than any previous epidemic, including the 2014-2016 outbreak which reported 28,000 cases with over 11,000 deaths. The World Health Organization is monitoring more than 17,000 potential contacts.
