The Czech Republic continues to face a shortage of tamoxifen-based medication for breast cancer patients. The Ministry of Health has introduced a special treatment program allowing pharmacists to open medication packages and dispense to patients the exact amount needed for approximately two months according to medical prescription. Approximately one thousand packages of this medication are being distributed to Czech pharmacies. Pharmacists can only divide intact blisters, not individual tablets, thereby maintaining treatment safety. Tamoxifen is a synthetic antiestrogen used to block the effects of estrogen hormones. According to oncologists, short-term treatment interruption of up to 14 days does not pose a fundamental problem. Since August, reimbursement has been approved for another medication by manufacturer Farmoz, which patients previously had to pay for themselves.
