The study examined the accessibility of 23 gyms in New Zealand for people with disabilities. The research combined quantitative accessibility audits of parking spaces, entrances, interiors and bathrooms according to NZS4121:2001 standards with qualitative interviews with gym staff. The most accessible features were parking spaces, footpaths, entrance doors and bathrooms with clear signage and well-designed ramps. Improvements are needed in service counters, lifts and communication for people with visual or hearing impairments. Community and university gyms were the most inclusive with experienced staff, while small private gym owners had limited knowledge of accessibility barriers and financial constraints. Recommendations include staff training, support from healthcare professionals in prescribing exercise and subsidised gym memberships.
