The pharmaceutical industry has significantly invested in expanding sterile manufacturing and fill-finish capacity over the past two years, driven by growing demand for GLP-1 therapies, biologics, and other complex injectable medicines. Decisions made during product development have a critical impact on manufacturing success, including product recovery, material efficiency, and process robustness. Product development evolves gradually from focusing on molecule understanding and clinical viability in early stages to addressing process transfer, filtration, and validation readiness in advanced stages. Manufacturing problems often originate from decisions made months or years before production begins. Formulations that perform well in the laboratory may behave differently in actual manufacturing environments, where practical challenges such as product loss during filtration or adsorption on surfaces emerge. Understanding how development priorities evolve helps explain why manufacturing performance is often determined long before a product enters the manufacturing suite.
