Scientists have discovered a molecular mechanism that coordinates the transport of mitochondria in cells using two motor proteins – kinesin and dynein. These proteins move in opposite directions along microtubules and their activity must be precisely synchronized. The molecular switch functions as a regulatory element that determines which motor protein will be active at a given time. This discovered mechanism is important for proper distribution of mitochondria between daughter cells during cell division. The research was published in the journal Science in August 2026 in volume 393, issue 6811 on pages 601-606. Understanding this process may help in research of mitochondrial disorders and cellular energy problems.
