The study examined the genetic heritability of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a disease leading to central vision loss. The research included 525 members of an Amish community, comprising 285 controls and 240 AMD patients classified using the Beckman grading scale. Using two methods - single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis and pedigree-based analysis - AMD heritability was estimated at 55% using SNP method and 49% using genealogical method. These estimates confirm a strong genetic influence on AMD development and are consistent with previous studies. The results suggest that beyond known genetic risk factors, additional genetic contribution exists, supporting the polygenic nature of this disease.
