War metaphors have been used in healthcare and medicine for decades. However, commentators note that such language risks stigmatizing not only the condition itself but also the person living with it. While messaging for other conditions like HIV and cancer has become more person-centered, the use of "battle" language remains common in diabetes advocacy campaigns. Militaristic messages suggest the need to "fight," "combat," and "defeat" diabetes. These campaigns have used slogans like "We fight to end diabetes" or "Know diabetes, fight diabetes." Although such messaging is often well-intentioned, aiming to unite the public and the diabetes community, the article suggests focusing on living a life with the condition rather than fighting a battle against it.
