Nicotine pouch, electronic cigarette and tobacco use and generalised anxiety among adolescents

The study examined the relationship between tobacco and nicotine product use and generalised anxiety among adolescents in Finland. The research involved 166,989 students aged 13-20 years from lower and upper secondary schools and vocational institutions. Results showed that 21.2% of participants reported generalised anxiety. The prevalence of anxiety increased with the frequency of use of all tobacco and nicotine products. Daily use of nicotine pouches was associated with higher odds of anxiety in boys (1.19-fold) and girls (1.74-fold) compared with never users. Daily e-cigarette use showed an even stronger association with anxiety (boys 1.96-fold, girls 2.29-fold). The study concluded that any use of tobacco and nicotine products is associated with anxiety among adolescents.
