[Correspondence] Cross-reactive Bundibugyo antibody responses in Guinean survivors of Ebola virus and recipients of rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP (Ervebo) in an outbreak setting

The article examines the potential use of the licensed Ebola vaccine (rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP; Ervebo) as a temporary measure to control the Bundibugyo virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is already the largest on record. The vaccine rVSVΔG-ZEBOV-GP provided partial heterologous protection against Bundibugyo virus in primate studies. The study investigated cross-reactive antibodies against Bundibugyo virus in Guinean Ebola survivors and individuals who received the Ervebo vaccine. Mixed responses against Bundibugyo virus were detected in West African and Congolese participants who received this vaccine. The vaccine could be considered as a potential temporary measure, particularly for individuals at high exposure risk, such as healthcare workers and contacts of infected persons.
