Prevalence and sociodemographic factors associated with unwanted pregnancy among adolescent girls in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya: a cross-sectional mixed-methods study

The study examined the occurrence of unwanted pregnancies among girls aged 12-18 years in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. The prevalence of unwanted pregnancy was 28.7%, varying significantly across camp sections, with the highest prevalence in Kakuma 2 (56.7%) and Kakuma 4 (54.1%). According to UNHCR data, 1,079 cases of adolescent pregnancy were reported between January 2024 and July 2025. The prevalence was higher among married girls compared to single, divorced, or separated girls. Christian girls had higher prevalence of unwanted pregnancy than girls of other religions. Qualitative findings indicated that older age, being out of school, and lower education levels are factors increasing vulnerability to unwanted pregnancies.
