Researchers have uncovered a hidden molecular warning sign of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can persist even when patients feel well and appear to be in remission. The team found that intestinal cells can remain unusually primed to die. This condition creates a "smoldering" defect that may help drive future flare-ups of the disease. The study involved analyzing approximately 900 human gut biopsies and patient-derived mini-intestines. This discovery suggests that IBD might have a more deeply rooted mechanism that persists even after symptoms subside. Understanding this defect could lead to new strategies for preventing relapses.
