The study examined the impact of cigarette filters on cigarette appeal and perception of health and environmental harms among adults in Great Britain. An online experiment involved 3,961 participants who were randomly assigned to view cigarettes either without filters or with conventional filters. Results showed that participants viewing cigarettes without filters had significantly lower odds of selecting a cigarette to smoke (19.1% versus 28.1%). Cigarettes without filters were also perceived as extremely harmful to health in 65.2% of cases compared to 59.9% for filtered cigarettes. Similar findings were observed among current smokers and daily smokers. The study concluded that removing cigarette filters reduces their appeal and increases perception of health risks, while filters provide no health protection and contribute to environmental pollution.
