Researchers conducted a genetic analysis of blood pressure in 140,559 participants from the Mexico City Prospective Study. They identified 78 independent genetic signals for systolic blood pressure, 61 for diastolic blood pressure, 88 for mean arterial pressure, and 24 for pulse pressure. Trans-ancestry meta-analysis confirmed 13 novel signals, with six additional signals replicated in admixed American ancestry meta-analysis. The study found significant differences between admixed American populations and other populations at nine genetic loci. Functional analysis showed that the heart, arterial vessels, adrenal glands, and kidneys are involved in blood pressure regulation. The study emphasizes the importance of including diverse populations in genetic research.
