A comprehensive review involving over 153,000 adults examined the effectiveness of calcium and vitamin D supplements. It found that these supplements, taken alone or together, have little impact on preventing fractures or falls. These conclusions apply to most older people. Researchers state that the findings challenge the routine use of these supplements for preventive purposes. Instead, they suggest focusing on other strategies. Recommended approaches include, for example, balance and resistance exercises.
