This 2024 Cochrane systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of multifactorial and multiple component interventions for preventing falls in older people aged 60 years and above. The analysis included 110 randomized controlled trials with a total of 48,919 participants. Multifactorial interventions (tailored to individual risk profiles) may reduce falls rate and risk of recurrent falls compared to usual care, but have little or no effect on the risk of falling. Multiple component interventions (same for everyone) have little or no effect on falls rate but may reduce the risk of falling. Comparison of multifactorial interventions with falls prevention advice showed that multifactorial interventions provide no additional benefit. The certainty of evidence was low to very low in most comparisons.
