Insurance coverage, healthcare use, and outpatient payment among adults with disability in Kenya before the SHA transition: a secondary analysis of KDHS 2022

The study analyzed differences in health insurance coverage, healthcare utilization, and outpatient payment between adults with and without disability in Kenya. Among 40,197 adults, 6.7% had disability. Adults with disability had higher uninsurance rates, though this difference diminished after adjusting for wealth and education. They substantially increased outpatient and hospitalization use. Among outpatient users with disability, 90.5% reported making payments regardless of insurance status. Among insured patients with disability, insurer contribution was recorded in only 15.1% of cases. The findings provide a baseline before the transition to the new SHA system in October 2024.
