Researchers developed a software framework to synchronize data from deep brain stimulation devices with data from wearable devices that monitor behavior. This system enables long-term recording of brain activity in natural settings along with information about sleep, physical activity, and other physiological parameters. In a study with three patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, researchers successfully synchronized 6,384 hours of intracranial neural recordings with wearable device data. Testing showed that the accuracy of temporal synchronization was sufficient for reliable linking of data from both sources. This open-source framework reduces technical barriers to creating neural data with behavioral information and enables long-term studies for discovering new biomarkers.
