A study investigated the paradoxical relationship between type 2 diabetes and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) using genetic analysis in 242,283 patients with diabetes and 37,214 patients with AAA. The research found that individual components of type 2 diabetes have different effects on AAA development. While elevated blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) were associated with lower AAA risk, insulin resistance and obesity were associated with increased risk. An experiment in mice confirmed that a high-fructose diet (a model of insulin resistance) increased abdominal aorta growth, while isolated hyperglycemia reduced this growth. The results suggest that improving insulin sensitivity could be an appropriate direction for AAA treatment.
