Evaluation of Trichodysplasia Spinulosa Polyomavirus in Skin Biopsies, United States

A research team from California evaluated 25 clinical cases of various inflammatory dermatoses for the presence of trichodysplasia spinulosa polyomavirus (TSPyV) using RNAscope in situ hybridization. TSPyV was not detected in any of the 25 skin biopsy samples, although a positive control sample from a case of trichodysplasia spinulosa showed positive staining. Among the examined patients, 13 of 25 had a history of corticosteroid administration before biopsy, with 10 of them receiving corticosteroids within 10 days before the procedure. The results suggest that endothelial TSPyV infection is not commonly detected in inflammatory skin biopsy specimens and likely does not play a role in the examined inflammatory skin conditions.
