Maternity reviews: we know what needs to change

All hospitals operate within the same maternity system, which is designed to produce its current outcomes. Birth is a physiological process, but it sometimes requires medical intervention, especially when it becomes life-threatening. The need for medical interventions is increasing due to an increasingly complex maternal population. Simultaneously, the system has attempted to reduce interventions by promoting physiological births. This has inadvertently led to a reduction in the availability of life-saving interventions. Consequently, an "intervention gap" has emerged, denying mothers and babies necessary procedures and causing avoidable harm.
