American Diabetes Association boycotted in free speech row

Doctors and scientists have initiated a boycott of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) following a dispute over the removal of five members from its annual meeting. The ADA claims the members were removed for violating the code of conduct, but boycott supporters dispute this claim. Elizabeth Selvin, deputy editor of the ADA's journal Diabetes Care, announced the boycott earlier this month. The boycott has been signed by at least 1,200 physicians, scientists, nurses, dieticians, and other healthcare professionals. According to an anonymous senior ADA official, many others, including junior researchers, support the boycott but refuse to sign due to concerns about damaging their careers. The boycott includes a moratorium on meeting attendance, grant reviews, journal submissions, fundraisers, and participation in the 2027 scientific sessions.
