The European Commission presented a new plan to protect children from social networks. Children under 13 years old will have a complete ban on using social media. Accounts of children aged 13 to 15 years must be under parental control. For children up to 18 years old, addictive features, infinite scrolling, unsolicited contact from strangers, and AI chatbots will be prohibited. Technology companies that fail to comply with these rules will face fines of up to 6 percent of their global annual revenue. Tech industry lobbying groups warn of data collection risks and conflicts with other European laws. Australia was the first country to introduce a similar ban, but a study showed that more than 8 out of 10 teenagers used social media despite the ban.
