A Czech project on centralization of surgical treatment for rectal cancer received the Ingeborg Hörhager Award at the international congress of the European Federation for coloRectal Cancer in Vienna in September. The project, led by Julius Örhalmi and colleagues, has been working since 2019 to improve care for rectal cancer patients throughout the Czech Republic. Before centralization, operations were performed at 108 facilities, with approximately 40 percent of procedures conducted at centers with fewer than 50 cases annually. Analysis of national data from 2019 showed approximately double 90-day mortality outside future centers. The project introduced the 90-day mortality indicator as a key parameter for surgical care safety. The goal of centralization is to achieve approximately one percent absolute reduction in postoperative mortality at the national level.
