ADHD and autism: PIP benefits for teens rising fastest in wealthier areas, analysis suggests

An analysis by the Nuffield Trust examined changes in the number of 16 to 17 year old young people with ADHD and autism receiving Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in England between 2019 and 2025. The number of PIP recipients in this age group increased significantly from 16,045 people (1.3% of the age group) in 2019 to 51,148 people (3.4%) in 2025. The highest recipient rates were recorded in more deprived areas, where unstable employment and lower educational achievement are more common. However, the analysis revealed that the growth in the number of recipients was fastest in wealthier areas of England. PIP is a social benefit available to working-age people with long-term illnesses and disabilities to help them cover additional living costs.
