Avian influenza overview June-August 2026

Between 5 June and 28 August 2026, 110 detections of the highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus were reported in Europe. These detections involved 7 domestic and 103 wild birds. Cases were reported in a total of 12 European countries. The number of detections remained at a seasonal low throughout the summer, continuing the decline observed since spring. In contrast to previous years, fewer colony-breeding seabirds were affected. The geographical range of detections was also more limited. In addition to birds, sporadic detections of the HPAI A(H5) virus were also reported in wild terrestrial carnivores and pinnipeds.
