This year saw the highest number of hematopoietic stem cell donors registered since the establishment of Czech donor registries. The Czech National Bone Marrow Donor Registry registered 24,494 people and the Czech Hematopoietic Cell Donor Registry registered 11,697 people. Hematopoietic stem cells are needed mainly for patients with leukemia and other serious blood and immune disorders. From the Plzen registry, 106 people donated hematopoietic stem cells, which is the highest number since its establishment. Overall, this year saw the most suitable donors found in the history of both registries. President Petr Pavel supported this initiative and pointed out that one in four leukemia patients cannot find a suitable donor in time. The average age of registered donors is 25 years.
