Genetic Associations with Alzheimer's, Lewy Body and Vascular Neuropathology Reveal Shared and Distinct Biological Pathways

The study investigated genetic factors associated with three major types of neuropathology that cause dementia: Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body disease, and vascular neuropathology. Researchers analyzed genetic data from dementia patient cohorts using modern genetic methods. Results showed that the APOE gene was associated only with Alzheimer's neuropathology. Although individual genes differed between the three neuropathology types, all three shared common genes and biological processes related to neuronal structure and communication. The findings suggest that different neuropathological conditions are driven by distinct genetic variants but converge on shared biological mechanisms. Understanding these common pathways may provide new insights into the causes of mixed neuropathology and age-related neurodegeneration of the brain.
