A large study tracking over 95,000 people suggests that sleep patterns may be linked to the risk of developing dozens of diseases. It was found that individuals who spent more time in REM sleep had lower risks of 83 conditions. These conditions included dementia, heart failure, and Parkinson’s disease. Conversely, more deep sleep was associated with lower risks of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and major depression. These findings highlight the importance of different sleep stages for overall health and disease prevention. The study thus provides valuable insights into the potential impact of sleep quality on long-term health.
