In 2026, nearly one thousand five hundred cases of hepatitis C have already been reported in the Czech Republic. The Ústecký and Central Bohemian regions show the highest number of cases, partly due to a high number of prisons reflected in the statistics. Unlike hepatitis type A, type C is primarily transmitted through blood. Transmission most commonly occurs among drug users. An infected person can live for years without any symptoms of the disease. For this reason, early detection of the infection is crucial. The article refers to an interview with MUDr. Kateřina Fabiánová, Ph.D., who specializes in the epidemiology of infectious diseases, to clarify the reasons for the increase in cases and the importance of testing.
