From the beginning of the year until the end of August, over 10,500 cases of Lyme borreliosis were recorded in the Czech Republic. This number represents almost a twofold increase compared to the same period last year. A new data collection method also contributes to the rise in statistics, as reports from general practitioners are now included in the early warning system. The article addresses questions about why the number of infected individuals is increasing and what precautions to take. It discusses factors contributing to the activity of ticks, which transmit the infection. The importance of early removal of an attached tick is emphasized, and the question of whether washing clothes is sufficient to eliminate parasites is addressed. These questions are answered by the head of the National Reference Laboratory for Lyme Borreliosis, RNDr. Kateřina Kybicová, Ph.D.
